Eastern Sierras, Mt. Whitney end of July '08

Here's a few photos from my trip to the Eastern Sierras last weekend culminating with last Sunday's ascent of Mt. Whitney.  On Friday and Saturday I did two acclimatizing hikes at 10,000' in the Mountains North of Whitney.

We (a group of 4 men and 6 women) departed Whitney Portal (8200') at 3:15AM Sunday morning and reached Whitney summit at 12:15PM.

It was quite an adventure:
22 miles round trip in one day beginning at 3AM.
15 3/4 hours:  9 hrs up/6.75 hrs down
6200 ft. elevation gain
Incredible scenery
Once is enough!

The last photo is of me at the 14,505ft. summit of Mt. Whitney
Notice the dark cloud overhead and the rain showers in the distance.  They came out of nowhere.
I quickly departed the summit and then the thunder, sleet and hail began.  Good thing I carried warm clothes and rain gear.
